How to Prepare for a Spray Tan
Proper preparation is essential to achieving a smooth, even, and long-lasting spray tan. Follow these steps to ensure the best possible results.
Pre-Tan Preparation
Shave or Wax
Complete any shaving or waxing at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. This allows pores to close and helps prevent the tanning solution from settling into them, which can cause a dotted appearance.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating the skin the day before your session is key to an even application. Removing dead skin cells helps prevent patchiness and uneven fading. Use a spray tan–approved body scrub or exfoliating mitt, focusing on dry areas such as elbows, knees, and ankles.
Arrive with Clean Skin
Your skin should be completely free of products. Avoid wearing makeup, deodorant, lotion, or perfume, as these can create a barrier that interferes with proper absorption of the tanning solution.
What to Wear
Wear loose-fitting, dark clothing and flip-flops to your appointment. Tight clothing can rub against freshly applied tan, and darker fabrics help prevent visible staining from the solution.
Hair Preparation
Secure Your Hair
If you have long hair, tie it up in a high bun or ponytail to keep it away from your skin during the application.
Use a Hair Cap
Most salons provide a disposable cap. Ensure all hair, including fine or short strands, is tucked inside. Position the cap about an inch behind your hairline and keep ears exposed to avoid uneven tan lines.
Avoid Hair Products
Do not apply hair products before your session, as they can transfer onto the skin and cause streaking.
Extra Care for Light Hair
Clients with blonde or lightened hair should ensure hair is fully covered, as the tanning solution may temporarily stain lighter strands.
What to Avoid Before Your Appointment
Lotions, makeup, deodorant, and perfume on the day of your tan
Exercise or sweating, which can affect application
Sunburn or peeling skin, as this will impact the final result
Aftercare: Maintaining Your Spray Tan
Proper aftercare is just as important as preparation to extend the life of your tan.
Wait Before Showering
Allow 18–24 hours before your first shower to let the tan fully develop. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, spray tan–approved body wash.
Avoid Sweating
Refrain from workouts or activities that cause sweating for at least 24 hours after your session.
Moisturize Daily
After the first 24 hours, begin using an oil-free moisturizer twice daily to maintain hydration and prolong your tan.
Limit Chlorine and Heat Exposure
Chlorine, hot tubs, and long hot showers can accelerate fading. Opt for shorter, cooler showers when possible.
Pat Dry
After showering, gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing to preserve the tan.
Timing Your Spray Tan
For best results, schedule your spray tan 2 days before an event. This allows time for the color to fully develop and settle into a natural-looking tone after the initial rinse.
